Taking Care Of O2 Sensors

Vehicles, especially cars are famous for creating senseless pollution in the world. This is true that a large part of the air pollution caused in the world is caused by private vehicles only, but one has to give credit to the automobile companies which are putting a lot of effort into ensuring that the cars emit as less of pollutants as possible. Thats why they have incorporated parts like oxygen sensors in our cars.

An oxygen sensor helps the engine maintain a perfect air and fuel ratio. But in order to make sure that your cars oxygen sensor keeps working properly, you must take its proper care. The problem with oxygen sensor is that most people are not even aware of their existence in their car. They only notice any problem with this part when their car starts to emit unusual amount of smoke. Many people even neglect this sign until they get fined for causing too much pollution.

But you must learn how to take care of your cars oxygen sensors in order to save money and the environment. Due to daily wear and tear, the sensor might get dirty and worn out. The normal combustion can contaminate its parts. The oil and ash from engine can also get accumulated on its sensing parts which decrease its performance. An old and worn out oxygen sensor loses the capability to detect any imbalance in oxygen/fuel ratio or work quickly.

Such a sensor may even lose the capacity to create the right voltage output for the detected imbalances in the ratio. It may create a voltage thats much lower than what is required. This might give the computer a wrong signal about the quantity of fuel that needs to bring the ratio to the perfect balance.

The worst part is that this problem may go undetected for a long time, as it deteriorates gradually. But if it goes on for a long time, then you might have to replace the complete air/fuel ratio sensor altogether. Thus, regular checks of oxygen sensor along with all the other parts of the engine are extremely important.

The problem may not be noticed right away because the change in performance occurs gradually. But, over time, the situation will get worse, ultimately requiring the sensor to be replaced to restore peak engine performance.

1. Age: Just like everything else, the oxygen sensor of the car also has a limited age period. The period may differ from car to car, but after few thousand miles, you may have to change it.

2. Contamination: The O2 sensor may get damaged due to the contamination caused by lead in the fuel. The silicon from the leaks in the internal coolant, silicon sprays, etc. may also contaminate the sensors.

3. Natural factors: Dirty roads, water and salt on roads might also damage the oxygen sensor of the car.

Thus, make sure that you safeguard your car from these factors. Oxygen sensors are very important for the performance of a car. So, make sure that you take proper care of them.
